Werner's Birthday

Today was a special day, as it was Werner’s birthday.

I had a few things planned, first I put chocolate and sweets in his handle bar bag, while he had a shower so before he started today’s ride he would find them and have some kind of present for his birthday. I needed to go to a bigger town to get Werner a better transistor radio that would pick up some stations so he can listen to at night in the van.

I had found a piece of cardboard that I needed to make a birthday sign several weeks ago and put it in the van. Werner wanted to know what I needed that bit of rubbish for, and I had a hard time trying to keep it.

I had brought some balloons the day before, so today all I had to do was drive several km ahead and tie them on a pole beside the road with my birthday sign, which I had to write on, no problem I thought.

Well this morning it was very cold and raining. Werner said not to go too far ahead in case the weather got really bad.

My plan did not turn out very easy at all. The pen would not write very well on my cardboard and the balloons I brought were nearly impossible to blow up. I blew up 1 ½ of the 6 and that was it.

The wind was blowing quite hard, so I had a lot of trouble to even get the sign to stay up as well as the balloons. Werner was not far away and I was sure, the rain would wash the words off before he got there.

Werner radioed me to see where I was and I could see him in the distance. So I jumped into the van and drove off before he saw what I was doing. I wanted it to look better but never mind the thought was there.

After Werner had finished today’s ride I organized for us to go out for lunch at a hotel and in the afternoon it would be coffee and cream cake. Also I was able to get Werner a radio.

To end off this day we booked into a motel to enjoy a few home comforts instead of being in the van.

But this was not the end of today, we even got to see our family at Allan and Corrina place by the use of a mobile video call, where a birthday tea and cake was organized to celebrate Werner’s birthday.

On the way to the shops in Mortlake we past the Rose gardens

While we were there it poured down with rain so we had to have a coffee before we could go back to camp

Halls Gap to Ararat

One last look at the Mountain we climbed yesterday

Now I can see the other side of Mt Williams on my way to Ararat

The Mountains were in view for most of today's drive to Ararat

Bike rider ahead, hope it is not Werner as I haven't seen him ride past me

Nasty little hill even the Van struggled to get up just before I got to Ararat

At Ararat thinking I would like to be back here when all the grapes are ready

A view of Ararat from the lookout, 5 km out of town

Werner took me on a 5.5 km mountain tour. Looks easy to start with

As it went on it got rockier and steeper

Just about need some robe to get up. What next Werner

Werner sitting at the top and waiting for me

The view was worth it. You can see some of Halls Gap at the bottom of photo

From the bottom it did not look that high but it was

A well earned ice cream for me and HOLDING Werner's

The Mackenzie waterfall which we had to walk a very steep path to get to the base of the fall

Rest time for me on the way up

View on the drive up to Mt William

View on the top looking south towards the coast. 1177 m above sea at this point

Werner is showing off his mountain skills

The last 2 km we had to walk and in places the gradients was 20 %, which is very steep
